Joe, the commission staff lead, told members the State Historic Preservation Office has placed CLG grant funds "in limbo," meaning the commission likely cannot apply this year. He said the commission nonetheless has $15,000 in its regular county budget to use for preservation work.
Joe described two basic options: use the money for reconnaissance-level survey to identify more historic properties across the county, or spend it on more intensive-level surveys and National Register nominations for a few targeted properties. "We still have $15,000 that was just in our regular budget, to complete some work," Joe said, and asked the commission for guidance on priorities.
Members recommended prioritizing reconnaissance-level work to build a comprehensive inventory before investing in nominations. They discussed target geographies including Wanship, Colville City and Brockport, and noted that consultant Kirk completed prior work and could likely perform similar surveys within the prior contract value (about $16,000). The commission agreed to pursue an RFP process and to ask county finance whether the $15,000 can be carried over if necessary to complete work into 2026.
