In the audit presentation the sanitation enterprise fund was described as the city's major enterprise fund. Ron Whitesides said revenues were up over $500,000 for the year due to a sanitation rate increase, while costs increased by over $400,000 because of higher hauler and landfill expenses, producing an operating excess of about $1,000,000 and a net position of roughly $3,500,000.
Whitesides noted that the fund's net position equated to about four to five months of coverage, a comparable level to the general fund's reserves. Commissioners acknowledged the fund's positive operating result while noting rising costs for disposal and hauling services as a continuing pressure for future rate-setting discussions.
