Moab law enforcement outlines zero-tolerance enforcement and $1,000 fine for illegal fireworks

"Our plan is to have 2 to 3 extra officers out from a time period about 8PM to 2AM every single night, the 2nd through the 5th," Lex said, summarizing the staffing plan and urging residents to call dispatch with the best possible location information if they observe illegal fireworks. Lex told the council the ordinance and state law treat illegal fireworks as an infraction with a $1,000 fine.
Officials said they will take a zero-tolerance approach during the enforcement period and that more serious conduct that causes a fire could lead to additional charges such as reckless burning or negligence and civil restitution under state law. The city attorney noted the ordinance's violation section does not itself create a standalone recovery clause for damages but that statutory remedies already exist under state code and can be referenced if council wants explicit language.
