Resident urges sidewalk at 490 Main to improve pedestrian safety

At the request of a public commenter, the board discussed a proposed sidewalk section on the south side of 490 Main to address pedestrian-safety concerns near the post office. Josh Benjell, who identified himself and provided his address, described frequent pedestrian traffic, vehicles parked close to the former loading dock and runoff that leaves the walking surface gravelly and difficult to navigate when it rains.
Benjell estimated the needed stretch at roughly 40 feet and suggested concrete as the most durable surface, noting ADA cross-slope and accessibility constraints. “It would improve pedestrian traffic through that area,” he said, emphasizing that a finished sidewalk would reduce the safety risks created by parked cars and gravel runoff. Trustees asked Benjell and staff to produce a linear footage estimate and a cost projection, and agreed to consider temporary signage or a short-term no-parking sign while they evaluate a permanent solution.
The board also discussed ADA slope standards and whether municipal streets could be built to a narrower profile than state (CDOT) standards, and asked staff to return with estimated costs and any permit or design constraints before making a funding decision.
