Board picks Calendar Option 2 for 2026–27 after debate over stacked graduations

The Beaufort County School District board selected Calendar Option 2 for the 2026–27 academic year after debate over start dates, fall breaks, and stacked graduation days. Staff presented three options developed with teachers, parents and administrators; the district reported 1,238 engaged survey participants and showed that Option 1 was teachers’ preferred option while Option 2 was parents’ favorite. A board member noted that logistics for holding multiple graduations on consecutive days were a primary concern for families and staff.

A board member moved to adopt Option 2 for the 2026–27 school year; the chair called the roll and the motion carried with one abstention and one absence. The board directed staff to return with specific graduation scheduling options so the board could set graduation dates separately. One board member stated during debate: "I'll make a motion that I'll make a motion that we go from option 2," and the motion was seconded and approved by recorded vote.
