Council hears options for failing North Substation transformer; replacement estimated near $300,000

City Administrator Dean Cordes updated the Meade City Council on Feb. 9 about a retest of the North Substation transformer after readings showed continued increases in gas. Cordes said he has received two quotes for a refurbished transformer with an average unit cost of roughly $300,000 and that quoted turnaround time from purchase to pickup would be about 40 to 45 weeks. He also told the council he has contacted the city's insurance provider to confirm the level required before replacement would be necessary and is awaiting a response.
Councilmember Lance DeLissa pressed staff on technical and maintenance questions, asking whether the city has an evaluation process for the equipment, what could cause changes in the readings, whether it is possible to evacuate or maintain damaged oil, and how to extend the oil's life. Cordes said he has two quotes and is awaiting a third and will follow up with the council when more information, including insurer guidance, is available.
