City Administrator Dean Cordes briefed the council on two related infrastructure matters: an ongoing search for replacement engines for the Power Plant and a recommended internal inspection of the North Substation transformer. Cordes said council needs more technical information on engine types, placement, and vendor technical assistance and will schedule a follow-up meeting with Mike Schmaderer of KMEA to get an independent assessment.
On inspections, Cordes presented an estimate from Farabee Mechanical Inc. of $29,969 to inspect all five engines as required by the insurer every three to five years. Council also heard a KMEA recommendation to take the spare transformer offline for an internal inspection (check for loose coils or burned spots) and to drain and replace oil and gaskets; Cordes will get cost estimates for moving and lifting services.
