Middletown to buy specialty boat after DEC grant to remove invasive water chestnuts

The department of public works reported it has obtained an $88,000 grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to buy a specialty boat to remove invasive water chestnuts from city reservoirs. DPW Commissioner Jacob said the boat will physically remove the plants and crews will receive manufacturer training before operations begin.
When asked whether the city could rent equipment instead, Jacob replied there is no rental option and gave the purchase price: "$120,000.88 of which is grant from DEC." He added that if the boat method proved ineffective the city would consider chemical controls as a last resort. The council did not vote on the purchase at the meeting; commissioners said the grant covers a substantial portion of the cost and training will follow delivery.
