Nonprofits and downtown business owners offer to help tenants and owner bring property up to code

During the public‑comment period several community groups and business owners offered to help tenants at 605 North Grama Street. JT Hahn of Armour of God Outreach said the organization feeds people in nearby parks and offered to 'spearhead' efforts to 'start finding homes or places while we help this gentleman get up to code.'
Condice Cooper, chair of the Main Street Board and president of the Downtown Killeen Merchants Association, said downtown owners were not 'anti' tenants and urged a program to help property owners bring buildings up to code while minimizing displacement. 'If there is a way that we can come together as a city, build a process, build a program,' Cooper said, 'we don't want 200 residents vacated out of their homes.'
Speakers emphasized practical assistance: one volunteer offered nurse‑aide training tied to Medicaid funding to help residents find work. The council heard multiple offers from local nonprofits and property owners to reduce barriers such as security deposits and work with eviction statuses to enable relocation when necessary.
