Resident raises Brighton Ponds complaint; mayor disputes accusation of racism and explains private-road limits

During public comment at the July 21 meeting, a resident identified as Rita Rodschford said she purchased a property in Brighton Ponds and expressed concern that the city would not help because of her nationality. The council allotted three minutes for her comment and Mayor Billy McKinney responded at length.

Mayor McKinney told Rodschford that Brighton Ponds roads are private and that the city and public works staff had created a special service agreement with residents after the homeowners association left. He urged the resident to meet after the meeting to discuss specifics, and said he was offended by the implication that the council would not help residents because of nationality. "Your approach in talking to this diverse council and this disperse city about some kind of racism... has nothing to do with it," McKinney said, and he apologized for any perceived harshness while defending the city’s record on inclusiveness.

The council and staff reiterated limits to city authority on private property and directed the resident to follow up with building and public-works staff for details. The mayor said developers who take over properties must address outstanding issues and that the city has limited resources and obligations for private roads.
