Public commenter urges board to add lot maintenance as rent for transportation center rises

Sarah Castaneda, a Durham resident and Orbda co president, raised safety concerns about the district's transportation lot and asked whether the newly proposed rent increase covers maintenance.
"There are large potholes all over the yard that we have to walk through and drive over daily," Castaneda said, adding that potholes fill with water and freeze in cold weather and that "there's also a 4 to 6 inch gap along the bus lot side of the pavement" near George Bennett Road that could damage buses and personal vehicles. She asked the board to consider adding lot maintenance to the contract.
Libby Simmons, the district's new business administrator, said the lease increase covers the building and the lot and that the lease previously had no increases during a 10-year term that ran through June 2026. "This year, we received notice that the increase is going from $2,000 per month to $3,500 per month, which is an annual increase of $18,000," Simmons said and offered to follow up on which maintenance responsibilities remain with the district versus the lessor.
Board members asked Simmons to report back after reviewing the master agreement addendum and said they will consider Castaneda's request when clarifying contract terms. The district did not provide a timeline at the meeting for when a maintenance clarification would be posted.
