Logansport council approves municipal wheel tax ordinance to retain registration revenue
Summary
The Logansport Common Council voted 7–0 on July 15 to adopt Ordinance 2026-17, converting the county registration excise into a municipal wheel tax so registration dollars raised in the city remain available for local street paving and to qualify the city for lane-mile distributions beginning summer 2027.

The Logansport Common Council voted unanimously on July 15 to adopt Ordinance 2026-17, creating a municipal wheel tax that will allow registration revenue paid by city residents to remain in Logansport and be used for street paving. The measure passed on second reading by a 7–0 roll call.
At a public hearing before the vote the Chair read language from state legislation explaining counties may not, after Dec. 31, 2026, impose a county vehicle excise tax where a municipal excise tax is in effect. The Chair told residents the change would make the city eligible for a lane-mile direct distribution starting in summer 2027 and that “all funds collected can only be used for street paving.”
Supporters urged the change as a way to direct local registration revenue to city streets rather than a county formula that currently allocates the majority of funds to the county. No public speakers registered formal opposition during the hearing. The ordinance now takes effect under the municipal implementation schedule and will be administered by city staff.
