Committee declines to recommend County Executive’s 6.3¢ property‑tax increase

The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee said it would not recommend the County Executive’s proposed 6.3¢ increase to the Montgomery County Public Schools supplemental property tax rate when the budget goes to the full Council.
Council staff (S10) reminded members that each cent of the MCPS supplemental rate is worth about $26.1 million to the budget and that the executive’s 6.3¢ increase equates to about $164.4 million in additional revenues. Chair Stewart (S1) said the committee collectively preferred not to advance the increase, noting the decision creates a budget gap that must be closed through other means if the Council sustains the vote.

Staff cautioned that rejecting the increase requires identifying offsetting reductions or revenue sources equal to the full amount of the proposed rise.
