Resident urges protected bike lanes and speed reduction near Terrace Park Elementary

At the start of the meeting, resident Jackie Trio told the council she moved to Mountlake Terrace four years ago and praised the walkability but said vehicular speeds on her street made her fearful for her young child's safety when biking to Terrace Park Elementary.
"My 6 year old's in 1st grade at Terrace Park Elementary... it's really wide and people speed a lot," Trio said. She urged the city to prioritize pedestrian safety in upcoming Phase 2 street and zoning changes and to consider separated or protected bike lanes rather than unprotected bike lanes.
Trio said neighborhood families she knows do not let fourth‑ or sixth‑grade children walk to school because of safety concerns and asked the council to consider speed‑reduction tools and improved infrastructure to support children, seniors and people who use wheelchairs. The council acknowledged the concerns and noted that staff are already discussing active‑transportation projects, safe‑routes‑to‑school initiatives and a neighborhood traffic safety plan as part of broader planning work.
No council vote resulted from the public comment, but members said they will continue to evaluate bicycle and pedestrian elements in the transportation and zoning projects that are underway.
