Select Board approves Bridge 42 design recommendations, sets July follow-up

The Jamaica Select Board voted June 8 to accept a set of preliminary design recommendations for Bridge 42, a steel-girder bridge that provides access to Jamaica State Park and is scheduled for construction in the 2030 window.
A town presenter told the board the state wants final designs prepared so projects can be pulled into the construction program as funding becomes available. "Their recommendation is to stick with the metallized coatings on the steel girders," the presenter said, noting the steel girders have "a lifespan as long as the bridge of 75 years." The board voted in favor of using the metallized coating because it offers longer life and lower maintenance than periodic painting.
The board also approved the project team's recommendation for the poured concrete liner appearance: the meeting record shows the board picked a larger-scale quarried-stone look without pigment so the concrete will develop a natural patina over time. "Their recommendation is to not have a dye in it," the presenter said, adding the visible treatments will not materially change construction costs, which are funded by a mix of state and federal sources.
On railings and striping, the board accepted a dark-green powder-coat for steel railings to help the structure blend into the landscape and approved striping that will functionally allow for one-lane, yield-style traffic with widened shoulders to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. The presenter said the final design team will post the full 100+ page plans and return on July 13 with final drawings for the board to review.
Next steps: the design team will provide final plans and schedule information at the July 13 meeting; no construction contract was awarded at this meeting.
