The Jamaica Select Board voted to adopt revised town road and bridge standards that require culverts on perennial streams to be a minimum of 18 inches in diameter.
Greg reviewed the revisions and said the intent is to increase resilience to larger storm events. "Drainage crossings that are culprits of crossing from one side of the road to the other that are on a perennial stream ... now must be at least 18 inches in diameter," Greg said during the presentation. The Board discussed how the standard would apply: culverts will not be retroactively removed but should be upgraded when they fail, when a road section is reconstructed, or when FEMA requires replacement.
Board members noted much of the town's culverts have already been upsized following storms since July 2023. The motion to adopt the road and bridge standards was offered by Greg, seconded by the Chair, and approved by voice vote. The highway crew and road foreman will implement the standard as parts of projects and replacements arise.
