Committee warns data‑breach vigilance and legacy mainframe risk need follow‑up

A committee member reminded colleagues that the three branches had committed to provide a memo on data breaches and cyber issues and urged that the commitment not be dropped. “That would also seem to be something we would want those committees of jurisdiction to ask about, perhaps…I would like to not have that get dropped. That was pretty disturbing as far as I'm concerned, and it needs attention and monitoring,” Rafaelia said. She also asked when the branches had committed to provide their memo, asking, “The beginning or the end of February?”
Lisa, a staff participant, urged the committee not to lose sight of legacy mainframe systems that remain in state government and said those systems represent risk because they are intertwined with newer systems and can limit the ability to change or respond to incidents. “That represents risk regardless of what anyone says,” Lisa said, calling for an assessment of how many legacy systems remain and where they pose vulnerabilities.
