Legislators ask KDA for per-owner costs and joint plan to address weeds on state land

During committee discussion the members pressed the Department of Agriculture for more precise economic-impact data and asked the agency to document steps it and other state entities have taken to control noxious weeds on state-owned land. Representative Corbett said committee staff calculated large statewide exposure when considering 45,000,000 acres of farm ground and asked for hard per-acre numbers; Representative Wasser and others asked for better accounting of taxpayer impacts.
A staff member read draft committee language urging KDA to continue working with state agencies to control noxious weeds on state-owned land and to commit to creating a joint plan; committee members added that the report should include actions taken by the Kansas Department of Transportation, railroads and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The committee set a follow-up request for KDA to provide the supplemental materials before the next meeting.
