Salt Trail trestle removed under VDOT mandate; council hears trail safety, drug-activity concerns

Town Manager Cecile Rosenbaum told the council the middle section of the Clinchburg trestle on the Salt Trail was removed to comply with a VDOT mandate to reopen the roadway. Rosenbaum reported expenses of $33,522.50 to date, covering an inspection and removal work by Elk Knob, and said the town met VDOT’s Nov. 15 deadline.
Public Safety Committee and police reports noted coordination with neighboring jurisdictions on trail issues. Councilman David Buchanan, Chief Bryan Lynch and Public Works Director Brandon Frye said the trail has generated a modest number of calls, some involving suspected drug activity, though Chief Lynch said his department had only seven to eight calls since 2021. The council discussed increased public engagement; Amanda Livingston’s outreach resulted in community input meetings and planned public communications.
Council and staff agreed to continue Salt Trail outreach and to invite Amanda Livingston to present a summary at a future council meeting.
