Public Safety committee pushes trail markers; county radio upgrade nearing full coverage

The Town of Saltville’s Public Safety Committee reported plans for trail safety and communications upgrades at meetings provided to councilmembers and included in council packets.
Committee minutes reviewed at the Jan. 13 council meeting show members agreed to place trail markers every half-mile with assigned numbers and sponsor names; the committee estimated 22 posts and 44 signs would be needed and discussed sign-post options (U‑channel posts, square posts, galvanized posts) and cost-sponsorships of roughly $150 per sign. Chair Buchanan recommended a joint meeting with the Recreation Committee to coordinate trail marker placement and potential funding.
The committee also reported on an Edgewood Motorola communications tower project that is currently active; once a foliage test is completed in late spring, the county’s upgraded system is expected to provide roughly 95% coverage across Smyth County, with final work remaining to add redundancies at the county dispatch center. The committee asked the Emergency Communications subcommittee to examine town web and social-account access for posting emergency information.
