Saltville's Department of Public Works told council in its year‑end review that 2025 included several major water leaks, multiple motor failures at the Cardwell Town well and reliance on temporary pumps to maintain service. The department reported that the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued a consent order after sanitary sewer overflows occurred during flood events, and corrective actions are underway.
Public Works stated the town plans two capital projects for 2026: construction of a pump station to replace a gravity aerial stream crossing on Allison Gap Road and replacement of water lines on Perryville Road and in the Cardwell Town area. The department also plans to expand staff training for leak detection and smoke testing, and said it will prioritize replacement of nonworking water valves and aging hydrants. The town previously scheduled a special meeting for Feb. 18 to accept bids for the pump station.
The Public Works report notes the temporary pumps and emergency response have been costly and that the department will seek to restructure staffing and equipment plans to reduce overflow events and improve system reliability.
