The Lamoille County Planning Commission approved Brownfields assessment funding for three former commercial properties in Johnson on Feb. 24. The Board voted to award a Phase I assessment for 198 Lower Main Street ($1,735), a Phase II assessment for 221 Lower Main Street ($41,550), and BRELLA application support covering 221 and 115–131 Lower Main Street ($1,220), for a total of $44,505.
Tasha Wallis presented the funding requests and described them as tied to buyout properties that require environmental assessment before buyouts proceed; she told the Board that the Health Center will be moving to the Johnson State University campus. When board member Carol Caldwell-Edmonds asked what a "BRELLA" is, Wallis replied, "it is a program that protects the property from future litigation." Dan McLaughlin moved the awards; Marina Meerburg seconded and the minutes record the motion as carried.
