The Lamoille County Planning Commission approved a Brownfields funding request of $11,010 to complete a phase-1 environmental site assessment and lead/asbestos building materials survey for the Wolcott Old Schoolhouse. Staff said the assessment is required to meet HUD environmental requirements and will enable future renovation and potential reuse as a cafe, historical society space or other community uses.
Maxfield English (Wolcott) noted the building is slated to be served by the community wastewater project and that community visioning has surfaced several reuse ideas. The motion to approve the funding request was made, seconded and carried by voice vote.
Staff noted the property remains town-owned and a community trust will manage renovation under the Village Trust Initiative; the Brownfields assessment is an early but required step to unlock redevelopment funding.
