Planning board recommends approval of Volusia County EMS headquarters site

The Daytona Beach Planning Board on July 23 approved a recommendation that the City Commission grant a semi‑public use permit for Volusia County Emergency Medical Services to locate a headquarters at 1720 Mason Boulevard.
Dannelly Pedic, the city’s principal planner, told the board the 4.42‑acre property is zoned Business/Automotive/Tourist Highway Interchange and was previously a used‑car dealership; staff concluded the proposal meets the semi‑public use standards and recommended forwarding the request to the commission. Pedic said the proposal includes offices, training facilities and a fleet maintenance area and that staff will administratively approve site‑plan details if the permit is later granted.
Jim Corbett, director of facility management for Volusia County, said the maintenance activity will be limited to routine, preventative work—"battery change, oil changes, tire rotations"—and that major repairs would occur elsewhere in Daytona Beach. Board members asked about traffic, screening and whether fleet work would be enclosed; Corbett said service work would occur in an enclosed facility and staff noted landscape screening along Mason Boulevard. The item is tentatively scheduled for City Commission consideration on Aug. 19.
