Town explores satellite-capable radios and alerting to shore up emergency communications

The Selectboard heard that regional emergency-management partners are evaluating radio systems and alerting options so the town can communicate if cell networks fail. "Radio is really, you know, a good backup," the Director told the board while describing planning work with Vermont Emergency Management and the regional emergency committee.

Officials raised topography as a constraint—South Kirby and North Kirby will likely need repeater sites for reliable coverage—and said they are exploring least-cost and dual-use solutions so town radios can interoperate with the fire department and neighboring towns. The Director described a demonstration of a satellite-capable "rapid radio" device; board members described existing town radios and discussed potential subscription costs and grant avenues. The Director said staff will return with options after regional review, likely next summer.
