Resident questions large warning sign on Brophy Lane; town cites mapping and safety rules

Property owner Peter Lerner asked the Selectboard to consider removing a large red warning sign and two boulders at the end of Brophy Lane that he said he can see from inside his house. Lerner said the barrier was installed after removal of an illegal footbridge and that, because no road currently crosses the river, he questioned the need for such a visible barrier.
Taylor Prouty and Town Administrator Shane O'Keefe explained the sign and boulders were installed after the footbridge removal and that mapping services (Google/Apple) still indicate the road connects across the river; unfamiliar drivers using GPS could assume a through route. O'Keefe said that removal would be constrained by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and insurance considerations, noting "it will not be easy to take down the warning barrier." The board asked O'Keefe to work with the town E911 coordinator to request that mapping services remove the erroneous connected-road depiction.
