Students urge traffic light at four‑way crossing, citing safety data

Generation Citizen students told the Meeker Board of Trustees they want a traffic signal at a four‑way crossing near the high school, citing safety concerns and local traffic figures. The students presented data that 243 cars pass the crossing daily and reported that 44% of high‑schoolers leave campus during lunch, which they said increases risk to students.

Town Administrator Jeff Wilbourn and trustees discussed next steps, including the possibility of an Oklahoma Department of Transportation traffic survey and review of existing traffic records. Trustee Aaron Head praised the students’ effort and encouraged continued engagement; Mayor Donna Weber also complimented the youth and supported follow‑up. The Board did not take formal action on the request during the meeting; staff and trustees referred the idea to the appropriate agencies for further study.
