Residents urge action after pedestrian death at Stevenson and Cole intersection

Residents told the Enumclaw City Council on June 22 that speeding and failure to stop at neighborhood intersections have become a public‑safety crisis and urged immediate and longer‑term measures after a pedestrian died in January.

At the podium, a resident (speaker 5) said she had previously alerted city staff and asked for an update on work at the Stevenson and Cole area. “We would still wish to have an update regarding how we're moving forward on the Stevenson Coal area,” she said, and urged the council to “please help” after noting that the pedestrian who was hit in January later passed away. The resident asked the city to pursue pedestrian funding and to speed the timetable for improvements.

Another commenter who identified himself as a Navy veteran (speaker 6) said drivers regularly speed through the corner and called for enforcement, lighting and signage. “Put in the lights, put in the signs 25 miles an hour, and take people's cars away,” he said, recounting that the woman named Eileen was in a wheelchair and later died following the collision.

Mayor and staff took the comments under advisement; no formal action or vote on a road project was reported at the meeting. The matter was raised during the public‑comment period rather than as a council agenda item, and residents asked the council for both temporary measures (handheld flags, signage) and expedited funding for permanent improvements.
