Bond counsel Allen Brooks briefed trustees on Meeker’s current total sales tax rate of 9.5 percent (1% county, 4% town, 4.5% state), the election timeline and requirements, and estimated costs for an election. Brooks told the Board total costs were estimated at $10,000–$15,000, including roughly $7,500 for bond counsel and about $300 per precinct.
Trustee Aaron Head recommended a deliberate approach and suggested the town gather information, evaluate options and include potential election costs in the upcoming budget, proposing a November election as a target if the April filing deadline could not be met for the June date. Head moved to proceed with gathering information and the motion carried with recorded yes votes from Thompson, Orman, Head and Weber.
Board members did not adopt a specific ballot question or set a date at the meeting; staff and counsel will need additional time to prepare legal documentation and cost estimates if the Board pursues a ballot measure.
