Police to buy rifle-rated plate carriers under governor's reimbursable grant

Chief Michael Dorsey presented a grant award from the governor's office that reimburses eligible purchases at 100 percent and asked council to approve buying rifle-rated plate carriers and plates to fulfill the grant award.
"We were awarded this grant back in September of last year," Chief Dorsey said. He asked permission to purchase five rifle-rated plate carriers and 10 plates (two plates per carrier) for a packet total shown in staff materials as $6,212.50; he noted the department will retain previously donated rifle-rated armor as spares. Council moved to allow the chief to make the purchase with the understanding the city will submit the paperwork for reimbursement to the governor's office; the motion passed by council voice vote.
Staff will complete grant reimbursement paperwork and retain records of purchases and donations as required by the grant program.
