State inspection finds two compromised monitoring wells; Selectboard rescinds permission for horses on landfill

Town Administrator Trish Waugh told the Selectboard that during a recent State inspection two of four monitoring wells at the town landfill were compromised and could not be sampled. The State also identified maintenance work that must be done promptly — trash at the perimeter and behind the new shed, trees growing at the limit of waste that risk root damage to the landfill cap, and holes and bare areas on the cap that need repair, seeding, and haying. Trish said photographs of completed work will be required for State records and sampling results are expected before the end of July.
Because of the ongoing work to meet landfill standards, the Selectboard rescinded an earlier May 6, 2025 agreement to allow horses on the landfill property. The board agreed the remediation items require immediate attention; Trish will follow up on marking trees for removal and will await sampling results before proposing longer-term remedies.
