Police chief reports rising summer call volume; UCCF funds tasers and cameras

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 13 that the department handled 269 calls between June 1 and Aug. 13, averaging about 3.63 calls per day, and that some incidents have required multi-hour responses.
Chief Pernice described recent calls including vehicle pursuits, protection-from-abuse cases, warrants, domestic incidents, drug activity and homelessness-related responses; he also said his officers attended an active-shooter training July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek Police Department. He reported the department applied to the UC Community Foundation and received awards covering four tasers and an additional set of security cameras for North Main Street.
Council expressed support for hiring the part-time officer that was approved later in the meeting; the minutes note the chief said the department appreciated council’s action to add staffing.
