Mayor says sirens run five minutes; recent storm led to sheltering and 320 veteran flags placed

Council Member Daily asked why the storm sirens didn’t continue to sound until the warning ended; Mayor Ruebke replied, “Five minutes is all they are programmed to run.” She also reported that both schools opened as shelters during the storm: about 65 people and around 25 dogs sheltered at the High School and roughly 40 people sheltered at the Elementary School.
Members of the council raised related maintenance and readiness points: Willhaus noted many dead trees at the cemetery and asked whether the cemetery would be ready for Memorial Day; Murphy thanked maintenance for filling a pothole in front of the Post Office and for opening the water park early; Josh said the McLemore family’s Fireman statue will be addressed and crews will use a bucket truck to take down trees. Mayor Ruebke said she placed 320 flags on veteran headstones at the cemetery for Memorial Day.
