The New Strawn City Council convened March 17 and handled a slate of routine and operational matters, approving consent items that included warrants of $25,824.10 and February payroll of $8,710.30. Mayor Rhonda Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:17 p.m., and the council approved the amended agenda by a 4-0 vote.
Council approved a series of motions affecting city operations. Jeanne Haas and David Christiansen secured approval to pay three Atmos utility bills totaling $962.47 from the General Fund. The council renewed the city's 2025—2026 insurance coverage through TrustPoint Insurance/EMC with an invoice of $39,450; the motion to continue coverage passed 5-0. The council also authorized Mayor Taylor to sign a new contract with Republic Services and approved increasing the residential trash rate to $17.47.
Maintenance and personnel items were authorized: the maintenance operator was approved to attend the KRWA spring conference with $180 registration funded from Water; the council budgeted $2,500 from Special Highway for dust abatement; and it approved advertising for a seasonal laborer at $15 per hour for up to 30 hours per week. The council formed a City Hall remodel committee (Taylor, Baker, Christiansen, Dwight, and Johnson) to write a request for proposals and set a budget workshop for April 16 at 6 p.m.
The meeting included an executive session called under K.S.A. 75-4319(b)(6) from 8:38 to 8:48 p.m.; the council returned with no action taken and adjourned at 8:55 p.m.
