City manager to distribute fire evacuation plan in newsletter; chief outlines zone-based approach

Staff announced that the upcoming city manager newsletter will include the police department's fire evacuation plan so residents can learn their evacuation zone and routes. The city manager said the department-developed plan will be distributed via the newsletter and that staff will explore additional roll-out methods, including utility-bill inserts and social-media and community-bulletin outreach.
The police chief summarized the plan: “It just breaks the city down into a color-coded grid of sorts with each grid cordoned off by a neighborhood and has specific letters assigned and then three routes — 101 North, 101 South, and 42,” the chief said. He emphasized the biggest challenge will be educating the public and suggested using the emergency-notification system and the city website to host outreach materials. Councilors and residents suggested adding a direct link in alert messages or partnering with local agencies and schools to amplify outreach.
Staff said they will contact the agency that produces Firewise materials to include brochures in the newsletter or make them available via the city's website, and they will return to the council with any follow-up suggestions for public education methods.
