Planning staff announce departures and interim coverage; new hire expected in August

Planning staff informed the commission on May 22 that several staffing changes are imminent: two employees (Nikki and Solon/Solon variants) have final days next Thursday, Shannon Smith has been hired as an interim planning assistant and the city will contract with Henry Hurley (Lane Council of Governments) for planning coverage until a new hire starts in mid‑August.
"She's our new planning assistant... she'll be the face of the planning department, after I leave," staff said, referring to Shannon Smith. The staff member also stated a planned departure date of June 20 and noted the city hired a new person who is expected to start in mid‑August under the title community development director. The staff member said contract planner Henry Hurley will attend meetings in person as needed while doing the bulk of planning work remotely from Eugene.
Commissioners offered thanks and farewells to departing staff. The changes will create an interim coverage period; staff said they are preparing hand‑off memos to document project status.
