Bethel SD 52 expands literacy coaching, uses DIBELS to target supports

Bethel SD 52 staff described how literacy coaches and assessment systems are being used to translate the district's science-of-reading curriculum into classroom practice. A presenter said literacy coaching began three years ago and that coaches "work together with teachers as well as administrators to help deepen all of our understanding around the science of reading and best practices in literacy."
The presentation explained the district administers DIBELS three times a year in K–5 to flag students at risk and help teams determine if a student's difficulty is with decoding or with language and background knowledge. "Those are indicators, for students of where they may be showing risk in their reading progress and what additional support they might need," a presenter said.
Staff described layered professional development: district-level training (including training in LETRS/structured literacy approaches) and building-level coaching focused on interpreting student data and implementing interventions in classrooms. Presenters said these supports are intended to create individualized plans for students identified by assessments and to sustain improved instruction across the school day and during breaks.
Staff cautioned the work is ongoing: preliminary results were encouraging but the district said it is not finished and will continue to double down on supports and data use.
