The Alcester City Council voted to grant a petition to vacate a portion of the right-of-way on Iowa Street (east side of Lots 1–234, Block 18) after a public hearing and council discussion.
A representative for the bank seeking the change described plans to remodel and modernize the building, saying the update would improve customer service and not significantly disrupt foot traffic. The presenter noted adjacent lots were largely industrial and said, “I don’t really think that there’s gonna be a lot of disruption to foot traffic,” while urging council to consider the community benefits of investment downtown. Council members asked whether vacating the alley would create a long-term nuisance if the property later changed hands; the attorney confirmed that once vacated, the right-of-way would no longer be public, and future use would be a private matter.
Chair moved to grant the petition; the council conducted a roll-call vote. The record shows: Julia — Aye; Vernon — Aye; Carrie — Aye (with reservations); Kendra — Aye. The motion carried with four affirmative votes out of five. The council thanked the applicant and moved on to other business.
