Selectboard votes to end wood burning at transfer station after neighbor complaints

Esther Fishman reported that the Department of Environmental Conservation had contacted the town following complaints from a neighbor about wood burning at the Transfer Station, and she summarized options explored for disposal. Fishman said bringing material to a private burner was prohibitively expensive and noted that because Londonderry is subject to Vermont's Act 250 land-use review, the town should not accept burning materials from outside the municipality.
The board unanimously voted to end all wood burning at the transfer station. Chair Tom Cavanagh moved the motion; Martha Dale seconded it. Selectboard members acknowledged the decision will increase disposal costs for some local businesses and organizers and said staff will investigate future options, including seeking a town permit for controlled burns of town-generated material on town-owned land.
