Conservation Commission and Selectboard adopt standardized 'Town Forest' names for local properties

The Conservation Commission presented a proposal to standardize the names of town conservation properties by appending "Town Forest" to make them more welcoming and easier to identify. Christine Birong-Smith, Conservation Commission Chair, listed the proposed names: Colby Hill Town Forest, River Bend Town Forest, Willard Woods Town Forest and Wildwoods Town Forest.
Christine said the change would clarify which lands the commission oversees and help align signage and the Town Plan. The board confirmed it supports using the names in signage and the Town Plan and discussed funding: a signage budget that had been estimated at $800 was increased to $1,600 through donations and other funding, and volunteers are working to lower costs (donated posts, etc.). Serena Fox asked whether a formal legal process such as trademarking was required; the board clarified naming and recording in Selectboard minutes and the Town Plan are the current measures for official recognition.
The Selectboard confirmed the names and supported pursuing signage and Town Plan alignment; further implementation details and sign procurement are to be coordinated by the Conservation Commission and Town Administrator.
