Board asks LRC to study CPE credit for committee and board service

Board members debated whether service on board committees — or service on other professional boards where a CPA performs technical work — should count toward continuing professional education (CPE). Supporters said modest, auditable credit would help recruitment and recognize the technical work volunteers perform; skeptics urged tight fences and clear audit trails.
"As somebody that... it wouldn't be self serving, I’d be in favor of opening that door," Joe Sullivan said, urging the board to let LRC explore a framework for claimable CPE credit for service on the board and committees. Board staff noted an existing rule used for the Review Acceptance Body (RAB): two hours of CPE per meeting, capped at 16 hours per renewal period, which could serve as a starting point for broader proposals.
The board asked LRC to draft specific rule proposals and recommended LRC focus first on a separate set of urgent rule and legislative work already scheduled. LRC will return proposed fences (what kinds of service qualify, maximum hours, audit requirements and evidence standards) for board review at a later meeting.
