GMP outlines 3-mile undergrounding project on Under the Mountain Road, seeks town approval

Green Mountain Power told the Londonderry Selectboard on July 7 that it plans to rebuild and bury the main distribution line along Under the Mountain Road to reduce outage frequency and duration.
Tim Jones, Green Mountain Power Program Manager, said GMP identified the route under its Zero Outage Initiative and anticipates "95% of the lines will go underground." He described a roughly three-mile project that would intercept customers where their services exist; maps in the meeting packet showed blue dotted lines for underground sections and solid lines for segments that might remain overhead. Jones said existing culverts "will be returned as found unless they are 24 inches or less, in which case they will be upsized and replaced." Construction notices will be sent a few weeks before work starts and GMP proposed starting in July or August and finishing this season, with one lane of the road to remain open during work.
Selectboard member Taylor Prouty said the project offers benefits to town residents, and Jones invited board members to observe similar GMP work on Plum Road in Townsend or Turkey Mountain Road in Jamaica. The Selectboard did not vote at the July 7 meeting; Jones said the item will be on the agenda for formal consideration at the July 21 Selectboard meeting.
