Chief Lankes described an 800-megahertz communications tower project and explained the BRIC grant opportunity for funding a tower site; he said the proposed location is on Jay Hill Road adjacent to an existing tower site and noted the project will replace an aging structure. The chief told commissioners the grant requires a 25% match and that the county had agreed to provide its share. "So my understanding is that we would be making a motion to give you your approval to pursue this grant under the understanding that it would be a $25,000 match from the city, $25,000 match from the county," a commissioner summarized prior to the motion.
A motion to allow the chief to pursue the BRIC grant application, with the city and county matches coming from the fire equipment reserve, was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners asked about the proposed site logistics and noted the need for site surveying and coordination with Motorola engineering and other partners; staff said a site visit with contractors and consultants was scheduled the following Monday. The action authorizes grant pursuit; final acceptance of any award will return to the commission for appropriation and contract actions.
