Emma Williams, chair of the Bloomington and Monroe County Human Rights Commission, presented the 2026 Human Rights Awards at the city council meeting, honoring two recipients for contributions to civil rights and community support.
"The Human Rights Award was established in 1997," Williams said. "This year the individual award is presented to Melanie Davis," recognized for advocacy, education and work with groups such as Protect Our People and B Town PFLAG, and for helping to found a local LGBTIQ center. Williams also presented the organizational award to Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, praising its food pantry, garden and educational programming for increasing access to nutritious food with dignity.
Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard representatives attended later in the public-comment period to highlight summer programs including drop-in kids' garden and kids-cook sessions and free monthly workshops. "Drop into Kids Garden," said Megan Betts, noting the pantry’s workshops and garden work days and inviting community participation.
