An airport-affiliated speaker described a recent short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) competition involving a local pilot who competed in Valdez, Alaska, and said organizers plan a practice STOL event and a full competition the week before next year’s FreedomFest that could draw roughly 100 pilots. Staff argued that those events help justify maintaining greater fuel availability and some capital outlay to support transient pilots.
Commissioners asked about timing and coordination: runway construction/design work is tied to congressional funding and is tentatively scheduled for 2027–2028; fuel purchases for events will be coordinated and staff said tank storage limits (about 2,000 gallons for 100-octane avgas) constrain inventory. No formal vote was taken; staff will continue to refine estimates and timing.
