Ozawkie mayor flags 4-5 Kansas Senate bills affecting small towns; community donations, bike prizes planned

Mayor Loren Lutes told the council he has been speaking with several legislators about four to five bills currently in the Kansas Senate that the mayor believes could make things harder for small rural towns like Ozawkie. The mayor said there has not been a call for signatures yet and that small-town mayors and other local officials have been informing state legislators of the difficulties these bills would cause.
In other updates the mayor read an activities update from Mazi Barnes noting the city received $190 in monetary donations, donated candy, and volunteer time from Laci Heller. The Meriden/Ozawkie Chamber of Commerce approved a request to purchase four bicycles to serve as grand prizes (one per age group) at an upcoming community event. The minutes also note the city should receive a draft of its code revision by the end of the week.
The mayor asked Maintenance Supervisor Mark Tenpenny for a grounds update, and Tenpenny reported a resolved parking issue at 102 Central and that seasonal mowing will begin in roughly three weeks, with last year's staffing needing three workers to keep up.
