Staff says runway extension would let larger aircraft use Ottawa's airport; taxiway reconstruction funded

Commissioners asked whether Ottawa's airport is intended to serve as a regional facility and about specific airfield projects. A city staff member said the airport is considered regional, that taxiway reconstruction is a replacement project already under way, and that the proposed runway extension would add length so larger planes could land.
"The extension of the runway is to add some additional space so that larger planes can come in and land there that aren't currently, able to land there," a city staff member said. Staff also noted that the city has already secured some grant funds for taxiway work and that an FAA earmark of $3,000,000 is part of the runway extension funding plan but that earmarked funds are not yet in hand.
