Commission sets Aug. 5 public hearing on possible demolition of 214 South Main

City staff asked the commission to set a public hearing to consider whether the commercial structure at 214 South Main should be repaired or demolished after an inspection found a large hole in the roof and interior ceiling deterioration.
"The building was placarded unsafe for habitation...there's a large hole in the roof...exposing the interior to ongoing weather damage," Property Improvement Partner Hodges told the commission and displayed exterior and interior photos taken by the fire department. Hodges recommended a hearing no earlier than Aug. 5 under Ottawa City Code Chapter 6, Article 14 to decide whether to order repair or demolition.
City staff said an engineering assessment has been requested; if the owner does not comply with orders issued following the hearing, the city may perform the work and assess unpaid costs as a lien on the property. A city staff member noted there is precedent for the city assisting with repairs and placing a lien to recoup expenses. The commission voted to set the hearing; the clerk recorded affirmative votes from Commissioners Skidmore, Van Laden, Allen, Mayor Pro Tem Crowley and Mayor Clayton.
