Residents urge Ottawa City commissioners to pause data‑center plans, call for public forum

Several residents used the public‑comment period at the June 10 Ottawa City Commission meeting to urge commissioners to pause consideration of a proposed data center near the I‑35 corridor.

"I oppose straining our electric grid for a data center. I oppose depleting our water sources for data centers. I oppose the dangerous waste that will spill into our ground and water," Lori Hazen said, identifying herself as a local resident. Brooke Sheets told the commission the community is "rallying" and asked officials to schedule a public forum, saying residents "are demanding" more transparency and that a moratorium—statewide or local—would be "ideal." Robin Spielman, who said she is undergoing cancer treatment, said she opposes the project and thanked commissioners for de‑escalation training for police.

Other commenters highlighted environmental risks. Stan Nichols recounted the historical importance of the Rock Creek watershed and asked whether the city should add more impervious surfaces and potential pollutant sources near homes, schools and churches. Terry Clotier, a retired wildlife biologist, warned about contaminants tied to data‑center operations. David Furman said he moved to Ottawa for its small‑town character and "adamantly opposed the data center," citing noise and pollution concerns.

The speakers framed their remarks as a call for public engagement and more information rather than a formal proposal before the commission. No formal action on a zoning change or development agreement for a data center was taken during the meeting.
