Senate members heard from Carol Gary, nominated to the Charter School Authorizer Board for a term beginning Sept. 1 and ending 08/31/2028. Gary, who said she has worked 32.5 years in public education across several Mississippi school districts, outlined a commitment to student-centered decision-making: "I truly believe that school must be focused on quality outcomes, must support the whole child, and work with families." She said greater transparency and higher expectations of charter operators would help improve outcomes.
Gary confirmed she began serving on the board in September; senators asked whether she had recommendations to improve charter performance. She reiterated the need for accountability and transparency as the board learns its oversight responsibilities. After senators spoke in support, the committee moved and advised and consented by voice vote, forwarding her nomination to the Senate floor.
